QIP rolls out Speed Test to measure mobile Internet speed
Moscow, September 27, 2011 — RBC OJSC (MICEX, RTS: RBCM) hereby announces having launched an application measuring the speed of data transmission via mobile devices - QIP Speed Test (speed.qip.ru). This service helps users to assess whether the actual data transmission capacity of mobile Internet provided by mobile operators corresponds with their announced capacity. It also enables users to choose the best operator offering the highest Internet access speed based on users` most popular destinations (home, work, favorite cafes/restaurants, country house, etc.).
By installing the free QIP Speed Test mobile application on a mobile phone, the user can measure the current data transmission speed at any time. The reading is automatically plotted on the map at http://speed.qip.ru. The check report includes the name of the mobile operator, the data transmission speed, and the user`s geographical location. The test results can be posted on Vkontakte, Facebook, and Twitter social networks. The interactive map will soon be available on mobile phones.
QIP Speed Test is now available on iPhone and iPad. The applications for Android and other popular mobile platforms are in the pipeline.
The application is operable anywhere in the world where there is access to mobile Internet. Geo-referencing of the test results involves the users of the service in the creation of a global mobile Internet map.
«The number of mobile Internet users is on the rise. Meanwhile, the actual data transmission speed via mobile phones doesn`t always live up to operators` claims. On the one hand, QIP Speed Test helps mobile Internet users to choose both a provider and a tariff plan. On the other hand, our new service will be useful to mobile operators because it helps them to quickly detect and make up for any shortcomings in their networks,» RBC CEO German Kaplun said.
