Russia's largest video sharing website Smotri.com is now available in App StoreMoscow, October 9, 2008 - OAO RBC Information Systems (RTS, MICEX: RBCI) has announced the launch of its line of application programs for iPhone. The creation of a video-sharing client for Russia's most popular video hosting website, Smotri.com, is RBC's first project for iPhone.
RBC is the first major Russian company to develop technology for providing access to its Internet resources from new-generation mobile phones. Using the Smotri.com application, users of iPhones can watch videos, store bookmarks, and search videos by topic and keyword. RBC plans to expand the application's capabilities in the future. In general, the development and implementation of popular RBC websites' clients for mobile phones is primarily aimed at further expanding the audience of these Internet resources.
The Smotri.com client is available to download free of charge from Apple's App Store, which offers software for iPhone and iPod Touch. RBC plans to create a series of products for the most popular mobile phone platforms.
"We are carefully following the developments in the sphere of applications for mobile phone platforms and find it very promising and financially attractive," said Mikhail Gurevich, General Director of RBC's subsidiary Media Mir. "Thanks to App Store capabilities, thousands of client programs have become popular and are successfully distributed. We have launched the first application for iPhone and plan to develop further in this direction. This is especially important in light of the recent launch of iPhone sales in Russia. I would like to point out that we will not restrict ourselves to the platform for iPhone, as we are also interested in, for example, Windows Mobile and Symbian operating systems."
Smotri.com is Russia's most popular free service for placing, storing, and watching video files, with a monthly audience of over 9m unique visitors. The website's users upload more than 2,000 videos every day. Smotri.com also offers unique technology for online broadcasts, which allows users to create personal broadcast channels.
The sale of iPhones in Russia was officially launched on October 3, 2008. According to forecasts, a total of 3.5m iPhones are expected to be sold in Russia between 2008 and 2010. About 50,000 iPhones are sold daily around the world.
App Store currently offers 3,000 applications, including approximately 700 games. Starting from the opening of App Store in June 2008, more than 60m program downloads have been registered.
